Yoga has many branches along its formation and evolution, making up its yoga lineage. One of the main definitions of the Sanskrit word of yoga is “unity”. In this sense, yoga is a process of recognizing the unity within ourselves and our relationship to the world.
The process of recognizing unity has emerged over time in many ways, in many places, and amongst many people. With this in mind, it is often difficult to accurately narrow down a specific lineage associated with a specific kind of yoga. The yoga offered at our studio is no different.
What we can say is the hot yoga we offer is contemporarily based on the 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises popularized by Bikram Choudhury. Mr. Choudhury’s lineage flows from his teacher Bishnu Ghosh who was a relative and student of Paramahansa Yogananda. Yoganandas book, “Autobiography of a Yogi” gives good insight into the lineage, practice and intent of the yoga offered at Yoga Sunné.
